This two-part series — ‘Fallen Portraits on the Soil’ and ‘The Rite of Passing By: I didn’t see them but I saw them’ — is set in mundane living environments. The installation portrays the overseen and questions the use of materials and images, and the limitations of photography itself.

In the first set, the viewer gazes into beauty and decay, eternity and ephemerality, of flowers secretly planted by the residents, and of dead insects; The second set draws on a large number of images taken since 2017 of discarded household items. The viewer considers the former use of the objects, and the previous owners.

Fallen Portraits on Soil 《墜落泥土的肖像》 is a series portraits of dead insects, animals and plants I encountered in my daily life. They are light and small, not exceptionally beautiful and almost unnoticeable when I first noticed them, but once I looked into them, I was drawn by the condensed essence of death, life, beauty, decay, eternity, ephemerality lying within these small creatures. It’s also the portrayal of my attempts and inability to capture the condensed vigorous essence lying within these creatures which is beyond visuals and words.

The Rite of Passing By: I didn’t see them but I saw them 《經過的儀式:我看見它們但沒有看到他們》 is a photography installation with a combination of abandoned actual objects and images. Since 2017, I started taking snaps of discarded household items in my neighbourhood and those on the street, and accumulated a lot of photos of these items while I never get to know who they belong to. I don’t usually look at my neighbours, perhaps I thought home could be one of the most intimate and private places for a person and I thought that’s a kind of respect. Their images stayed in my phone, computer and memory, while they could be forgotten by their owners whom I never would know their identity.  I imagine the state of these families through the objects they left behind and appreciate the beauty when they are at their state of being abandoned.

Notes:

I’ve always been bad at being concise, nor being clean and neat. While our perspective of perceiving can always be changing, and the subjects themselves could be changing as well. It’s always difficult for me to select a single image or moment to represent a certain subject. A single moment for me is composed of different moments and perspectives.

Sometimes when I look at things, especially when I want to spend time looking at them, I would attempt to trace their contours or outlines in my mind, trying to look into every detail. Yet, it would never be enough and would never be concrete. All the traces I’ve drawn in my mind could be gone anytime or shattered without concrete lines being drawn out. Meanwhile, there’s always a certain depth in the subjects, that I could be drawn into these creatures while looking, it could be a bottomless journey of looking if I hadn’t had the awareness to stop myself. The graph below illustrates how I perceive an image, how I felt it’s blending with other moments and the deepness lying within an image.

This is my state of mind when I was working on The Rite of Passing By: I didn’t see them but I saw them. With more than thousands of pictures accumulated over the years and new images taken, each image and object could be correlated to one another in different ways, in terms of material, forms, colour…and the images could hardly be displayed all at once. Each exhibit of The Rite of Passing By would always be different, working with different dynamics and chemistry, and a new jam each time.  The Rite of Passing By has been exhibited once in a group show in Negative Space in 2021, on a much smaller scale. At that time, I struggled most with how to show these images without depriving them of the original context, and wondered if formal framings would diminish the energy and soul lying within these images. Then, I encountered these wood pieces being thrown by chance, and decided that maybe they could work as structures or frames in containing these images and I’m still trying with this approach till now.
